Khloe Kardashian had Hair Loss From CovidKhloé Kardashian is not alone when it comes to hair loss as one of the long-term health consequences from Covid-19. In a patient cohort study from The Lancet Medical Journal, 22% of the patients who survived Covid-19 suffered hair loss six months after being diagnosed.

Reporting hair loss months after the virus has left your body has been written in an article by the  Cleveland Clinic, and a topic of conversation for the Facebook Group- Survivor Corps. With over 170K members sharing posts about their hair loss after having Covid.

Many Doctors and health experts point to a hair loss condition called Telogen effluvium as the culprit- a symptom triggered by stress.

What is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is a condition when there is hair loss due to an extreme amount of stress on the body. Stress from illness, high fever, severe psychological stress, and some medications (such as beta-blockers and antidepressants) are some of the causes of Telogen effluvium.

Hair loss caused by Telogen typically begins three to six months after the traumatic event. The stress and anxiety from the event shift hair growth into Telogen or resting growth stage. The pause in growth eventually leads to hair falling out.

And in a small case study published by NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), participants suffered from hair loss symptoms three to six months after having the virus. The participants reported shedding hair or even losing clumps of hair. The report linked this post-Covid19 symptom to the hair loss condition Telogen effluvium.

The positive news is that Telogen effluvium is not permanent, and the hair loss will slowly recover. However, in some cases, hair loss could be irreversible in people prone to patterned baldness.

Can You Recover from Hair Loss After Covid-19?

The hair loss from Telogen effluvium will eventually end about 6-8 months after the stress is no longer active in the body. The best way to ease your body back into the state without underlying stressors will take a combination of efforts.
