Hair Transplants and TikTok – How Social Media Helps Hair Restoration Patients
The availability of information about hair transplants has evolved greatly over the last decade. In the past, patients had to schedule an appointment with a doctor to get the in-depth information they wanted to learn about hair restoration. Thanks to the rise of social media, anyone interested in having a hair restoration procedure can get the information they desire from actual patients as well as experienced and board-certified surgeons experienced in performing hair transplants. One of the most popular social media apps is TikTok and many potential patients are turning to this app to learn more about the hair transplant process from doctors such as our own @hairtransplantdr.
Some of Dr. Mohebi’s most popular TikTok videos include:

TikTok and Hair Transplant – Why the Topic is Popular on the Platform
The subject of a hair transplant is often an uncomfortable one for a patient as they don’t want to admit to others, they are experiencing hair loss on their scalp. Someone that is suffering from hair loss often turns to social media to get more information about this condition.
TikTok has proven to be a very popular platform for people to discuss their hair transplant procedures. The ability to share videos and “before and after” photos of their results show future patients the type of natural, long-lasting results that can be achieved with a hair transplant. In addition, a person that had the surgery can directly address the audience watching the video and share their story in their own words.
Dr. Mohebi on TikTok and Hair Transplants
When asked why he decided to start posting videos on TikTok, Dr. Mohebi said he wanted to be able to share hair transplant information with a wide audience. “Even in a city the size of Los Angeles, there are only so many patients you can see per week. The ability to share videos on social media platforms such as TikTok means you can reach people all over the United States and around the world.”
Dr. Mohebi added, “There are patients interested in learning more about a hair transplant, but they might not have easy access to an experienced and board-certified surgeon where they live. TikTok allows our practice to reach those who might not be sure where they can turn to in order to get their desired information. The idea of undergoing a surgical procedure can be quite scary if you don’t have enough information to make an informed decision. TikTok allows us to answer patient questions and address their concerns in entertaining and educational videos.”
Hair Transplants and Natural Results
The public might not realize it, but they likely know someone who had a hair transplant in the past. Hair restoration provides long-lasting results that are natural in appearance and the hair that grows in after the surgery does not look any different than the hair that was already on the scalp.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant procedure that individually removes hair grafts from the donor area of the scalp. (FYI: The donor area is usually located on the back and sides of the scalp.) Once the hair grafts are individually removed from the donor area on the body, the surgeon places them in the balding or thinning areas on the scalp. Because the hair grafts are removed individually during the surgery, there is not a long linear scar after the procedure is finished.

Hair Transplants and TikTok – Positive Reactions from the Public
One of the most gratifying aspects of sharing hair transplant information on TikTok is the positive reaction it creates in patients. The ability to watch videos and gain important insights into the process, in the comfort of their own home, is very important to many people currently experiencing hair loss. There is less of a stigma about wanting to get more information about the treatment if patients are able to learn without having to ask friends or family members for help researching the procedure.
The age range of patients using TikTok to get more information ranges from older men who were not aware of their options in the past to younger patients trying to be more proactive in finding a solution to their male-pattern baldness at an early age. Even if the stigma surrounding a hair transplant is not fully eliminated, there does seem to be a larger number of men (and women) who are more open about wanting to find a solution for their thinning hair.
Dr. Mohebi enjoys the fact that TikTok is opening new doors for patients and breaking down the resistance some felt in the past about having a Los Angeles hair transplant procedure (or elsewhere in the country). “There have been times when men were afraid to come forward and discuss their hair loss for fear of being made fun of by their friends or family. TikTok videos are helping to normalize the hair restoration process in the eyes of the public. They also give many men the confidence they need to schedule a consultation appointment and/or have the procedure.”
